There’s always talk about white television shows that ought to have black faces, but many of these same critics tend to overlook the reality that programming in general could stand to diversify, too. Diversity comes in many shades – most of which go beyond color. To that end, while it’s lovely to see so many shows strive to show the more “positive” aspects of black life, more often than not it appears to come at the expense of offering our perspective as it relates to race, class, and pop culture on the airwaves.

Gospel singer, pastor Marvin Winans assaulted, carjacked in Detroit
May 17th, 2012
Solar DETROIT (AP) — Popular Detroit pastor and gospel singer Marvin Winans was assaulted and carjacked Wednesday afternoon at a gas station on the city’s west side.
The attack happened about 3:20 p.m., and the suspects fled with an unknown amount of cash and Winans’ SUV, police said.
Winans, 54, told WXYZ-TV that four or five young men followed him from inside the gas station and attacked him while he gassed up his vehicle.
Winans said he didn’t believe he was seriously hurt, but planned to seek medical attention.
He said his attackers appeared to be among 10 young men he passed by inside the station, and he warily watched them as he pumped gas.
“I’m just saddened that it has come to this,” Winans said. “This kind of nonsense just has to stop. It’s just the savageness of what’s happening in the street.”
He also believes his attackers didn’t recognize him. Winans is pastor of the 4,500-member Perfecting Church on Detroit’s east side. In February, he gave singer Whitney Houston’s eulogy.
“And if they did, it didn’t make much difference,” said Winans, who has been active in civic issues, including taking a stand against the proliferation of strip clubs in Detroit’s neighborhoods.
Autopsy: Trayvon Martin killed by single gunshot fired at ‘intermediate range’
May 17th, 2012
Solar Trayvon Martin was killed by a gunshot to the chest, which was fired from “intermediate range.” That according to an autopsy report from the Volusia County medical examiner.
The report, dated March 15th, details the injuries to Martin, 17, who was shot to death by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman February 26th.
The report stated that Martin suffered a penetrating gunshot wound on the left side of his chest. The entrance wound was fired at “intermediate range.” It is not clear how close that would place Zimmerman and Martin.
The report says the bullet passed through Martin’s left ventricle “from the front to the back,” and that it entered his lungs, creating “perforations.”
The only other apparent injury to Martin was an abrasion on one of his ring fingers, about a quarter to one-eighth of an inch long.
NBC News reviewed the report on Wednesday.
Also Wednesday, ABC News obtained an exclusive copy of a medical report from Zimmerman’s personal physician the day after the shooting. The report, which NBC News also reviewed, found that Zimmerman had a “closed fracture” of the nose, indicating it was likely broken, scalp lacerations that did not require stitches, and two black eyes.
Both documents have emerged as hundreds of pages of evidence, along with 67 CDs containing photos, surveillance video — including from the 7-11 where Martin purchased iced tea and candy prior to the confrontation with Zimmerman, and from the Retreat at Twin Lakes clubhouse in Sanford, Florida — and witness interviews in the case.
Zimmerman faces second degree murder charges in the slaying.
