HBCU Round-Up: North Carolina Central Cruises into MEAC Semifinals
NORFOLK, Va., March 8, 2016–Top-seeded North Carolina Central used a 21-4 run over a six-minute span of the first half to break the game open and cruised to a 95-60 win over ninth-seeded Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday night in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s quarterfinals at the Norfolk Scope Arena.
All five starters for the Eagles (23-8) finished in double figures as Dejuan Graf topped them with 18 points and nine assists, while MEAC Player of the Year Patrick Cole was two assists from a triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Rashaun Madison added 15 points on 5-of-9 from 3-point range, while Del’vin Dickerson added 13 and six rebounds and Kyle Benton chipped in with 10 points.
A free throw by Jeffrey Altidort brought Bethune-Cookman to 23-15 with 11:17 left in the first half. The top-seeded Eagles erupted then on a 21-4 run capped by a Will Ransom dunk with 5:24 left to lead 44-19.
For the game, NCCU was 34-of-63 from the floor for a blistering 54 percent and 8-of-18 from 3-point land (44.4 percent). They outrebounded Bethune-Cookman 41-29.
The Wildcats (10-22) were topped by Quinton Forrest and Reggie Baker with 13 points apiece.
North Carolina Central will next face the winner of Thursday’s 8 p.m. quarterfinal between fourth-seeded Hampton and fifth-seeded Maryland Eastern Shore.
