HBCU Sports News: SDN to carry Track and Field, Softball Championships
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) office has announced that the SWAC Digital Network will be carrying both the SWAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships as well as the SWAC Softball Championship for this spring sports season.
SDN will be live streaming the third and final day of competition of the Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be hosted by institution member Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, TX, beginning with the first event at 9 a.m. and the final event of the day scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
The SWAC Softball Championship returns to the campus of Alabama State University in Montgomery, Ala. for the Championship on Saturday, May 12 with a first pitch set for 2 p.m. A second game would also be carried, if necessary, with the “if” game scheduled 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. The tournament is formatted for a double elimination tournament.
In Track and Field, the Alabama State women’s team will be seeking an unprecedented ninth consecutive championship and 13th overall since the 2002 season. The Lady Hornets had won sixth straight Triple Crown titles (Cross Country, Indoor Track and Field and Outdoor Track and Field Championships) before Mississippi Valley State broke up that run by winning the 2017 Women’s Cross-Country Championships this past October in Clinton, Miss. at the Choctaw Running Trails. Alabama State responded by winning the 2018 Indoor Track and Field Championships back in February at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham.
In the men’s circuit, Grambling State won last year’s title by half a point over host Prairie View A&M and just 13 points over Alabama State. The Tigers secured the title with the fastest dash to the finish line in the 4×400 relay. Jackson State won this year’s Men’s Cross-Country title in October and Alabama State went on to take the Indoor Track and Field Championships so the aspirations of a triple crown champion this year were dashed. Grambling State has won nine of the previous 10 Men’s Outdoor titles.
Broadcasters Matt Pederson and Lincoln Rose will be live on the call.

The SWAC East Division remains a tight race as well with Alcorn State (8-3 SWAC), Alabama A&M (9-5) and Alabama State (7-4) all jockeying for a top seed.
An automatic bid into the 2018 NCAA Division I softball tournament will be at stake.
