Miles made it four straight wins Monday night, defeating Kentucky State 63-49 at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. Devonte Fuller and Damian Archer each scored 15 points and the Golden Bears defense closed the game out with a flourish, remaining undefeated in conference play by keeping their third straight opponent (and sixth overall) under 50 points.
After opening a 13-point lead less than six minutes into the second half, Miles (11-4, 8-0 SIAC West) went cold, missing four shots and turning the ball over twice as KSU (6-11, 4-6) went on a 12-1 run the cut its deficit to 42-40. But Umar Frost (eight points, four rebounds) would score consecutive baskets and the defense started to turn the screws on the Thorobreds.
It took four minutes for KSU to score its next basket, and after short David Jelks jumper cut the deficit to 48-44, the Golden Bears would allow another field goal. The Thorobreds would miss their last six shots and added two turnovers as they shot 29.6 percent from the field in the second half and just under 31 percent for the entire game. Miles had a decided edge in rebounds (42-31) and forced 15 turnovers that led to 18 points.
Kevin Hayes had 12 points and Ditalion Battle added 10 points for Kentucky State. Miles, which plays at Lane on Saturday at 4 p.m., got solid contributions from Nathan Sheffield (six points, eight rebounds), Rashawn Chapman (six points, two assists, two rebounds) and Jeffrey Dockett (six points, six rebounds).
