Lots of folks have been talking about the upcoming movie Judas and the Black Messiah, which tells the story of the Black Panther movement. And a musical centerpiece of the movie was released today from the hard working, uber talented singer and songwriter H.E.R.
“Fight For You” has the immediate feel of a sweaty 1960s summer day, with a funky, rich underpinning, vocal arrangements that fall somewhere between classic Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, and an immediacy that gets the listener’s heart pumping. And H.E.R. brings it all into focus lyrically:
Mental institution causing so much confusion
Seems the only solution is a new еvolution
We can’t take it no more
No, it can’t be ignored
When they knock on your door, will you be ready for war?
H.E.R. may be the most prolific young artist around (be sure to see her sing “America The Beautiful” at this weekend’s Super Bowl), and it feels like every move she makes is the right one. “Fight For You” is no exception. Check it out below and revel in the artistry of this young star rising.
